Behind the design
Issued by the Ministry of Magic, 'Dark Arts Defence Basics for Beginners' was assigned by Professor Umbridge to fifth year students, heavily censoring Hogwarts' approach to Defence Against the Dark Arts lessons. Our design features the childish cover with its illustrations of playful black cats and two wizarding children poring over the very same textbook on which they appear. Inspired by the surreal 'Droste effect' of an infinite repeating image, MinaLima designed the original graphic prop to reflect the textbook's patronising contents and Professor Umbridge's scheme to diminish the practical magic skills of her students.
