Behind the design
In this reimagined scene, the Phantom calls to Christine from within the mirror of her dressing room, commending his protégé on her triumphant first performance as the new star of the Opera Populaire. The opulent frame surrounding the illustration is inspired by the theatrical set and sculptural ornamentation of The Phantom of the Opera production (designed by Maria Björnson), featuring the grand theatre box specifically reserved for the Opera Ghost’s exclusive use, Box 5. As flamboyant masks from the masquerade ball and a single red rose lie at the base of the frame, the shadow of the Phantom stalks the grand staircase of the opera house and the voluptuous curtains set the stage for the gothic romance to unfold.

In this reimagined scene, Christine and the Phantom sing a haunting duet as they glide across the subterranean lake to his shadowy lair beneath the opera house. The opulent frame surrounding the illustration is inspired by the theatrical set and sculptural ornamentation of The Phantom of the Opera production (designed by Maria Björnson), featuring the theatre’s glittering chandelier which the Phantom infamously sends crashing down in bitter fury at the end of Act I. As the Phantom’s music box topped with a cymbal-playing monkey sits at the base of the frame, the Golden Angel hangs overhead and the voluptuous curtains set the stage for the gothic romance to unfold.

In this reimagined scene, the Phantom sings to Christine to let her darker side give in and entreats her to forget the world and life she knew before. The opulent frame surrounding the illustration is inspired by the theatrical set and sculptural ornamentation of The Phantom of the Opera production (designed by Maria Björnson), featuring the grand theatre box frequented by Raoul and the opera house directors. As the Phantom’s ‘Don Juan Triumphant’ musical score and his Red Death mask from the masquerade ball lie at the base of the frame, the shadow of the Opera Ghost stalks the tunnels beneath the theatre and the voluptuous curtains set the stage for the gothic romance to unfold.
